Ever wonder how Indie Rock music has gotten so popular? I do too. Was it because of (500) Days of Summer? Nah. Indie Rock came about waaaaay before that but has now become so hipster-cool and ironically mainstream.
How It All Started
1965 seems to be the most influential year for Indie musicians. It was Indie Pop back then and yes, The Beatles were alive and affected the Byrds and the whole world.
The Velvet Underground
All Indie fans know who they are. Why? They are only the most influential band in the Indie movement. They have affected the subgroups of punk, Goth, post punk, indie pop.
The First Indie Music Shop
Back then, vinyl was the hit and as Geoff Travis returns from his travels to the US to the UK, he decided to open up a shop that sold rare indie records and the place became a hub of the indie scene and was called Rough Trade. Imagine all the hipsters of our time finding his store as they travel back in time. You got it: pure pandemonium.
The Ramones and Eric Clapton
Influential enough to create the whole genre of UK Punk, The Ramones transcended all performing bands during the Independence Day ’76. On the other hand, Eric Clapton creates punk politics later on through Rock Against Racism.
The Big Time of 80’s
This was a big time for Indie music as Depeche Mode exceeds expectations. This is also when The Smiths debuted on the Top of the Pops, making them so popular among teens of the generation with their subversive ideas into song. 1986 was a big year as the NME cassette finally put together indie artists classified as underpowered guitar music made by wheyfaced, middle-class, white people.”
Sub Pop also established itself that year for grunge music in the mid-80’s offered by the bands Scratch Acid and Sonic Youth.
One of the most popular modes of Indie music at the moment, Post-Rock was invented by a band called Slint who has “explored the dynamic possibilities of space” along with the distinction of quiet and loud music in their album Spiderland. It was rock like you’ve never heard before, hence the term post-rock.
Gosh! I can’t even enumerate the number of Indie bands out there. You guys may know them or not but listen to their music and tell us what you think. BTW, if you want to know what indie bands are rocking in year 2000 onwards, read our October 25 issue. Why that long? Well, we want to give you the best indie rock band list, that’s why.
