Hey, it’s only a cliché because it’s true: nobody’s perfect. Even the best fall down sometimes. Accept that. Here’s proof: a list of popular Hollywood celebrities with movies that flopped at the box office.
1. Tom Cruise
Yes, the face of the Mission Impossible movie franchise has starred in a flop of a movie. Rock of Ages (2012) was so bad even this box office king couldn’t save it. We may line up for an MI movie, but maybe not for a big screen production based on a Broadway musical–even if Tom Cruise is in it. This kind of makes sense, since Tom Cruise is established as an action star. Besides, a Broadway musical turned into a movie? Not the same as catching it on stage, no? In any case, the figures from Forbes say that the movie only earned back 75% of its budget.
2. Adam Sandler
If you’ll always be a kid at heart, it’s possible that you’ve seen Adam Sandler’s Bedtime Stories. This funny guy just seems to inject himself into every role he takes on. He’s such an endearing talent. But as we said, nobody’s perfect. His 2012 film That’s My Boy did fare better than Cruise’s, returning 81% of its budget. Still, it came short of breaking even.
3. Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Can I get a woot-woot? Of course his movie’s going to sell! This guy’s sleek and charming and has a sexy guy-next-door vibe. And did he rock The Dark Knight Rises and set hearts a-flutter in 500 Days of Summer! It’s a sure home run to have him star in a movie.
Have you heard of Premium Rush (2012)? Not surprised if you haven’t. It starred JGL but had such a weak showing in U.S. box office that it ultimately failed to make a bleep in the international radar. Figures from Forbes, however, show it was kind enough to return 83% of its budget.
4. Johnny Depp
The weird thing about this list is that some of the actors on it are actually faces of movie franchises. So, why oh why do they choose to make movies that do not even break even? Sadly, the same is true for good old Johnny Depp.
The Lone Ranger (2013) turned out to be a real flop. Walt Disney expects to lose over $150 million on this venture. But we can bet Depp, who’s been known to enjoy experimenting in his movie roles, enjoyed playing Indian tribesman Tonto, tattoos and dead crow on his headdress and all.
5. Angelina Jolie
In addition to his 2013 movie that tanked, Johnny Depp also co-starred with Angelina Jolie in the box office flop The Tourist (2010). Angelina Jolie in a flop? No way!
Well, yes way! Despite the stellar combo, the movie barely made a splash with an estimated return of just 67%. But looking at the Jolie-Pitt clan, it does seem like Ms. Tomb Raider’s heart does lie elsewhere. It’s no secret that she’s a mom to six kids. Potential mush aside, it seems just right that Anj is more intent on internalizing a different role.
There you go, a short list of Hollywood A-Listers that got a double whammy on the big screen. In case you get to making your own movie someday, remember that even the big stars have had their fair share of epic fails. Even Thomas A. Edison once said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
